Hey there bird-loving artist! Did you know that there are hundreds of gorgeous photos of birds on Wikimedia Commons? And they are all free for you to use, although most require attribution to the photographer—a small price to pay.
Here are ten of my favorites. I chose these images especially for bird artists based on the clarity of the photos as well as more interesting perspectives and positions of the birds. Enjoy!
1. Bay-headed Bee-eater

2. Lilac-breasted Roller

3. Red-backed Shrike

4. Swallow-tailed Bee-eater

5. Lesson’s Motmot

6. North Island Robin

7. White-browed Scrubwren

8. Yellow-legged Gull

9. Superb Fairy Wren (Female)

10. Seychelles Sunbird

Dear Tara,
Thank you so much for these photos. I just started learning to paint and draw in my mid-50s and love to do birds as my subject. I have been looking to good bird references, and I’m so glad I just found your website!
Best,
Chris
Hi Chris,
So glad you enjoyed the post. I became a full-time artist at 54 so I know what you’re talking about! 🙂
With gratitude,
Tara
